Miami Shores is very interesting also. Many, many prewar homes to choose from. Unlike Biscayne Park and El Portal, you have a pretty well defined central business district.
Your best values — according to my research — are east of North Miami Avenue but west of Biscayne. Generally I consider the area between N. Miami Ave and NE 6th Ave to be most similar to the eastern part of El Portal.
